[APBeta] FoV issue workaround

I am also unable to reproduce this, but I suspected that it was a side-effect of images overlapping the FoV (the particular examples and counterexamples John gave me - see report below - were a smoking gun).

I'll take another poke at it today, and re-examine the code to see if there are any obvious boundary cases.
