Paul,

Test #1

Created a new empty plan file.

Saved it as NGCV7840#1

Add all 7840 NGC items from the NGC Accurate Catalogue

Made NO changes to the plan

Took 6 seconds to get the Save Window on 64-bit | Took 1 second to get
Save Window on 32-bit

Took 17 seconds to save and close AP on 64 bit | Took 4 seconds to
save and close AP on 32 bit

Test #2

Created a new empty plan file.

Saved it as NGCV7840#2

Add all 7840 NGC items from the NGC Accurate Catalogue

Made the following changes to the plan

1. Adjusted the columns to fit the text

2. Sorted the plan by Constellation and RA

Took 31 seconds to get the Save Window on 64-bit | Took 27 second to get
Save Window on 32-bit

Took 18 seconds to save and close AP on 64-bit | Took 3 seconds to
save and close AP on 32 bit

Note: When I close AP, I use the X in the upper right corner of the
screen to do the save and close.

Both the 32 bit and 64 bit Windows 7 systems have roughly
the same hardware specifications.

John

I am seeing a several second delay (sometimes up to 10 seconds) anytime a
plan file is closed. Opening a plan appears to have improved drastically
during the last few beta releases. When closing a plan, the "closing
document" window opens up immediately and then it takes several seconds
before the "save changes" window opens. This happens only on the 64-bit
system (Home Premium). The 32 bit system is almost instantaneous. During
the wait for the "save changes" window to appear, the disk I/O flashes
continuously. This is true even for a newly created plan with nothing in
it. To do the comparison, I installed AP on Win 7 32-bit and copied all
plans, preferences, etc from the 64-bit system to the 32 bit system.

How big is your plan document file on disk? When you open it, a copy of it
is made to the temporary folder. When you close it, data are written to the
temporary copy and if any changes are noted, the Save Changes dialog is put
up. If you elect to save changes the temporary copy then overwrites the
"real" document.

This is not the most elegant method of doing things, and is a legacy of V1
where the plan document format was/is fragile.

Try this for me: create a new untitled document, open the NGC catalogue and
add all 7000+ objects to the plan. Save it. See if that document does the
same "10 second" open/close thing.

My next step is to completely remove AP from the 64-bit system, and
reinstall from scratch. If the issue goes away, I will start adding my
"live" data elements one at a time to see if any are the culprit.

I'm not seeing slow open/close times on my Win7Ultimate 64bit system. What
sort of times are you seeing?

Robin

Paul,

I would like to offer my services when you wish address the slow plan
open/close times in Windows 7 64-bit. I have both the 32-bit and 64-bit
versions of Windows 7 (Home Premium) on separate computers that are located
in the same room. I have over 40 years of computer experience that might be
of some help in the debug process. Just let me know when and how I can be
of service.

Sincerely,

John Switzer

FWIW, the slow open/close times are not a problem on my Win 7 32-bit system.
