The preferable, and more reliable, way is to connect to your router. However, there's no reason why you can't connect directly using the crossover cable.
Once you've done that, open your browser and try this URL:
http://169.254.1.1/GETPLACE
That should return a page with your Star Book's current Lat/Long/GMT Offset.
Note: I haven't looked at the Star Book manual to see what you have to set up to enable this feature.
We should also take this private to avoid disturbing the other wildlife.
