I think a better (and simpler) compromise is outlined in my previous
message: Provide a user setting to choose the directory for DSS
database, and make the default location along with all the other
files. Users who wish to exclude DSS from their backups can simply
choose a different DSS folder, and then exclude that folder from Time
Machine.
