Well, you can specify that Time Machine (the best feature of Mac OS X  
Leopard, IMHO) ignore selected folders when backing up. I do this for  
the folder containing my Windows installation VM files, since they are  
many GB in size and contain nothing of importance (sorry)).

I could also look at a compromise solution. The database software  
allows several different databases to be accessed as one, so I could  
create smaller files incrementally. Once an image database file  
reaches, say, 50MB, I would create a new one, etc. That way only one  
of the files would be active and require backing up (unless deletions  
were made). This would also make it easier to incorporate external  
image databases into the mix (e.g. a database of all the NGC/IC object  
images on DVD).
