Not strictly true. I would create a boolean user field by right- 
clicking the user field list and using Edit User-defined fields...:

Then when I was selecting objects I would click on the check box in  
the user field list to select/unselect. You can include this column in  
your object list (Edit->Columns) and sort on it, etc.

You can reset all values by selecting the user field in the list,  
right clicking, and and using "Delete All xxx Values", where xxx is  
your column name.

Just trying this has suggested some convenience tweaks to me :^).

I like it. Might be tricky to implement, but then again it might turn  
out to be trivial.
