That would explain why it works for you.

Some older images that were imported from your cache might be slightly  
off-centre. This was a side effect of the way I did things a few years  
back.

Also, with the new image database functionality, and image will be  
associated with an object if the object appears anywhere in the image,  
not just at the centre. e.g. an image centred on M81, but also showing  
M82, would be attached to both objects.

Are there any icons showing at the top right corner of the plan  
window? It sounds like there's a background thread at work.

I need to add some functionality to display thread activity, since it  
seems to be affecting some folk more than others.
