[APBeta] V2.0b99 - No Problems - Two Questions

Hi Paul,

You are right: I shouldn't cheer about an apparently successful backup without verifying the restore. However, I have just done that, backup on one laptop and restore on another one. Everything OK. Obervations, preferences, image database, everthing came across nicely and is fully functioning.

Just two hickups: a clear error message on the absence of the template plan and the absence of the main plan I was working on. Latter was a bit strange, I had not noticed that AP plans are not standard part of the backup. Have now included the Documents\Astroplanner folder as an additonal folder in the list of items to backup. Bringing across the template plan and setting that again as template in general prefs also resolved the other item. Folder structure is the same across my laptops and desktop (as far as AP is concerned) so that makes things easier.

Thanks for clarifying my earlier questions. Observations are indeed not bold again when brought across from one computer to another or after copying the plan to another location on disk and opening the copied or moved plan.

Kind regards,
Hans

Backup is in order again. Thanks very much for that.

Don't speak too soon. Restore might not be working properly (according to a bug logged yesterday).
On closer look I do have two GUI related questions:
1. When I look at the observations on objects in a plan there is the overview at the left bottom corner with the observations logged in various sessions. Some of these are shown in bold text. Why is that? Note that this is not the case when looking in the observation database.

Those are observations that were logged from the currently opened plan.
Note that if they are NOT bold, it doesn't necessarily mean that they were NOT logged from the current plan. If you move the plan document on disk, or the observation was imported from V1, the observation will not be emboldened.
I have spent some time trying to figure out why, but could not come up with any suitable answer. First I thought these were the ones not yet saved or backed-up or something, but that is not the case. Neither is there any relationship with obervation notes, seeing specification, rating, user defined fields or anything else I could imagine. I also could not find anything on the observation settings and preferences.

2. On the same screen (Plan, Observations tab) there is a check-box for the end time of a session. Why is that? What does it do?

It forces your session to end at the current time. In theory, if you then log a new observation, it should start a new session. In practice, this is largely redundant, and I have been meaning to remove it.
