What is the first thing that comes up after 5 minutes? Is it asking if 
you trust this program? Next time, for fun, right click on the installer 
and select run as administrator.

I have some programs (don't remember if AP is one of them) that seems to 
wait forever before the installation starts. Run as Administrator seems 
to get past that. Not sure why and I don't think it happens all the time 
but it didn't happen with Vista and it does with 7. The disk activity 
you mention before the installer starts makes me think your anti-virus 
is taking its time scanning the installation files. If you trust them, 
maybe try turning off AV during the install and see if that makes a 
difference.

Neither is a solution but might be a clue.
