Well, after much kicking and screaming, I was finally able to get a  
serial port operational in Windows running on my Mac. It would seem  
that the APV2 ASCOM experience leaves a lot to be desired. I will be  
working on a simple test app to figure out the ins and outs of ASCOM/ 
POTH/etc. before I start tweaking AP code (which is tediously slow  
when debugging Windows apps). Stay tuned.
