I think the whole paradigm shift from MDI to SDI was to remove the
concept of an "application" -- for the most part there are just
documents.
Users familiar with the "new world order" are therefore likely to be
quite surprised by the dialog box. I can't think of any other apps that
do this. Plus, the launch time of V2 seems to be much improved, so I'm
not sure it's needed.
But I think an "expert mode" feature would be fine -- it would just need
to be backwards from your suggestion (ie: hold key down to get dialog
instead of to bypass it).
