Keep in mind that I'm a pure Windows guy, so maybe it can't work this way
under Mac os.

Anyway, in the multi document interface that you've adopted, when at least
one document is open, there should be a small "x" at the far right, under
the big "X" that means close the app. The sole purpose of this small x is to
allow you to close the last open document without closing the app. Check out
the behavior in MS Word for a better idea of what I'm talking about.
